When I Was a Kid…

My Google-Fu Is Weak…

Really? No search hits for <grin alignment="evil" /> ?

The Cover Album I’d Buy

2009-10-23 11:34

The original artists covering Weird Al’s spoof of their song… Red Hot Chili Peppers covering Bedrock Anthem. Coolio covering Amish Paradise.

Mind you, we’ve missed the boat on Nirvana covering Smells Like Nirvana or Michael Jackson covering Eat It.

A Week In The Life…

2009-10-16 23:39

This is what my work week looked like the week I was in Lexington. Don’t let the gaps in the schedule fool you… I was just too busy to update my calendar to reflect the meetings I had in those times.

BTW, my department is hiring, both developers and project managers. Don’t worry, your week won’t look like that. I just had to compact 9 months worth of meetings into less than 2 weeks.

Amr = Kaput. Nick & Dina = Tired.

2009-10-10 16:34

Our file server, “Amr”, died last weekend. Despite being RAID1 and having an additional backup, we have no files as all three disks seem corrupted. If we’ve ever sent you pictures on CDs or DVDs, can you send them (or a copy) back to us?

I spent 5 days in the Netherlands last week instead of the expected 3, working relatively long hours. As a result, both Dina and I are tired… weary almost. We’re looking forward to spending the weekend in, without impending travel, for the first time in ages.

Titles

Some of the people that help you at an Apple Store have the title of “Lead Genius”. I think a better title would be “Fucking Genius”.

Management vs. Development

2009-09-25 01:21

Not having a compiler to check my work makes management much more difficult than software development.

Misc Kid Stuff

2009-09-07 19:20
  • Alex talks up a storm when he’s not shy. Arianna coos almost incessantly at times when she’s so inclined. Alex never really cooed.
  • Arianna holds her head up most of the time unless she’s tired.
  • The kids were jet lagged… woke up at 03:00, 03:00, 05:00, and finally 07:00.
  • Alex has a stuffed lion named Bear (named when he was around a year old), a stuffed groundhog named Pidgeon (named last month), and a stuffed dragon named ToeToe (because he has big toes).

Would Have Been So Cool

Bregenzwald, Vorarlberg, Austria

2009-08-10 08:06

On Saturday, after being bureaucratically productive in the morning, we headed to Bregenz to pick up a few things we can’t easily find in Switzerland (Rice Dreams, cheap diapers, good selection of beer). Sadly, once we were done, it was raining and there was a lot of traffic along the lake and near the old town. We decided to drive through Bregenzwald. Somehow it was more like I imagined Schwartzwald (the Black Forest) would be than Schwartzwald itself.

Milestones

2009-08-01 11:21

Arianna can hold her head up for a fair bit of time, and can occasionally roll over from her stomach to her back.

iPAC 2009

2009-08-01 11:19

Drove to iPAC in Barmstedt. 800km each way. With 2 kids, that means almost 2 full days of travel… which is *really* long when you go to the wrong Münden. Along the way, we saw Heidelberg, Würzberg, Hamburg, and the area that provided inspiration for the brothers Grimm, known as the fairy tale road. With kids and sightseeing, we average under 50km/h. This despite the fact that we were normally driving around 160km/h on the autobahn.

Saw lots of good friends. Probably served as birth control for Sola (drove with us there) and V (drove with us back).

All In A Day

2009-07-21 21:18

You know you’re in Switzerland when…

  • You smell a wood fire on the way home from work in the evening. Mmm…
  • You have too much cheese and chocolate in the house. Yes… it is possible… but only in Switzerland.

You know you’re a parent when…

  • You’re happy your kid pooped in the potty.
  • You’re even happier because it means that he’s done pooping in the shower.

Weekend In Luzern / Pilatus

2009-07-21 00:03

Marc and Douglas, as well as Erin and Ogden were visiting this weekend. We went to Luzern. Notable sights included the Transportation Museum, as well as a Saturday night stay atop Pilatus.

Frustration

2009-07-06 18:28

People telling me to stop working late and go home, and then doing (or not doing) things that “require” me to do more work.

Ridiculous Directions

2009-07-05 15:51

Here’s How to get software for Windows Mobile on Your Cell Phone:
In your web browser on your cell phone, go to http://wap.software.com/portal/menu.do?id=5705 click on “software“, then from the drop down menu select “software for Windows Mobile!” or you can get it now by clicking the “send to cell” button above and having the link sent to your phone!

One of the stupidest mobile download experiences ever, from a company that should know better.

Schwangau, Bayern, Deutschland

2009-07-05 11:18
  • This is one of the reasons we moved here. On a random Saturday morning, decide we want to see something. Hop into the car, drive through Switzerland, Austria, and Germany, and arrive at “Sleeping Beauty’s castle” (according to Alex).
  • One whole day without using my computer. Withdrawal.
  • Schloss Neuschwanstein is newer than our old apartment in Cambridge.
  • Schloss Neuschwanstein and Schloss Hohenschwangau are even more beautiful on the inside.
