Health Goals

2010-12-27 11:01

Lose some weight so that I can start running in the spring.

  • About 10kg / 22lbs, getting me down to 75kg / 165lbs
  • Do it by taking opportunities to be active, doing a bit of daily exercise, and not eating like a pig.
  • If work calms down, go to the gym at lunch… but who are we kidding… I’m not going to do that unless my job turns into Evare.
  • Weight loss is so that I can run without putting as much strain on my knee.

Fitness / Weight Loss Goals

2008-08-31 15:09
  • Start Date: 2008-10-01 (when we move to CH).
  • End Date: 2010-10-01 (when we move back to Boston).
  • Starting Weight: ~185 pounds.
  • Goal Weight: 160 pounds.
  • Methodology: More walking, better eating, daily exercise (e.g., push-ups, sit-ups).

I have running-related goals that dovetail with weight loss, but I’m leaving those until I can actually run again.

Uh-Oh

2008-06-03 22:10

Remember, about a month ago, I applied for the New York ½ Marathon? Well… I got accepted. Better yet, my cousin who ran the Run To Remember with me was also accepted.

Bad news is my physical therapist thinks I have a meniscal tear and tendinosis, so I’m not whether I’ll actually be able to run. Not to mention that running with an extra 15 pounds on my frame isn’t the easiest thing to do.

Ran, Sick

2008-05-12 08:49

Ran 4M in 45m with Lily yesterday. I’m out of shape / she’s a slave-driver.

Alex threw up for the 3rd (our bed, 04:45), 4th (our bed / on Dina, 07:10), and 5th (kitchen sink, 7:40) times in his life today.

Marathon Plans?

2008-04-28 19:15

I’m thinking of running the Jungfrau-Marathon in 2009. Anyone want to encourage me by pledging to run with me?

Dina’s reaction was, and continues to be, fear for my life. I think that the route elevation may be part of the reason. The fact that the course record is 2:50ish might also be telling me that this may not be the first marathon I want to run.

Run

2008-04-26 11:41

Ran for the first time in almost a year. ~3 miles. ~40 minutes. With Alex/stroller. Mildly hungover from a birthday dinner last night. All in all, I’m happy. It feels like I’ve taken the first, important, step to getting back on track with my running. As usual, the first two miles were the worst. The last one was just starting to be bearable.

Unclear on Cause and Effect

2008-04-26 10:11

Quoting Alex:

Mommy, ice cream? OK.
Big bite ice cream.
[holding his head, crying] Mommy, boo-boo (Alex’s word for “hurts”) .
Big bite ice cream. No small bite. Big bite.
[again, holding his head, crying] Boo-boo head.

Apparently explaining an ice cream headache to a 22-month old is difficult.

Ran: New Charles River Run

2007-06-24 11:01

New Charles River Run, 7.5M, 1:17:17 gun time. I think my actual time was closer to 1:15, though I surely didn’t break the 10 minute mile pace that I was hoping to. On the other hand, given that I’ve been running 11 minute miles of late, and I haven’t run in 4 weeks since the ½ marathon, I’m pretty happy with things.

I also managed to snag a number of run pamphlets for other ½ marathons this fall.

Run Results

2007-05-27 14:52

Photograph: Temple Arch On The Lake, Tokyo, Japan, March-April 2005, © Nick Varacalli.Completed Boston’s Run To Remember ½ marathon this morning in 2:21:16. Full race results are up at Cool Running. My cousin finished in about 2:18.

  • Given my gimpy knee, my goal was to finish.
  • My original goal was to finish in under 2:30.
  • I’m happy with the time and the under-11 minute pace. On the other hand I’m (intellectually) disappointed that I finished 451/482 in my division (Male 30-39).
  • My iPod gave up at mile 9 again. Time to get a new shuffle. I think I’ll cave and go for the newer clip instead of the older stick.
  • The cute asses run faster than I do. In the pack I was running with I ended up following cute pony-tails or pithy t-shirts.
  • My knee hurt the 1st step of my warm-up jog. It threatened pain a couple of times on uneven surfaces, but never followed through. It hurt again a bit while climbing the stairs to our place after the race. Applying ice, heat, and ibuprofen has helped a lot.
  • New shoes helped.
  • Very scenic. Boston skyline looked postcardy.

Go me!

Yesterday’s Run

2007-05-21 23:09

Photograph: Hot Springs Bamboo Pipe, Tokyo, Japan, March-April 2005, © Nick Varacalli. On the good side, I ran 13.2M yesterday in 2h33m. All in all, pretty good.

On the bad side… well… I just need to whine for a bit… sorry.

  • It was drizzling / raining.
  • At mile 5, my left nipple started chafing (despite having applied liberal amounts of BodyGlide). At mile 6 I gave up trying to put up with said chafing and took off my shirt.
  • Rain + no shirt = cold Nick.
  • I’m generally pro-nudity, but I felt like a bit (OK, a lot) of an idiot with a runner’s tan and a muffin-top.
  • Rain + glasses = near zero visibility.
  • Rain + uneven running surfaces = puddles. Puddles + shoes = cold, wet feet. Cold wet feet + 13.2M = light blistering.
  • Rain + no shirt + iPod shuffle = non-functioning iPod shuffle at mile 10. Thankfully, after some time to dry out, it’s now working again.
  • Old shoes = general badness all around. Bought new shoes today.
  • The worst part, at about mile 9 my right knee started killing me. I’m quite surprised that I finished the run that quickly given how badly I was limp-running. I’m also surprised, in retrospect, that I ran through the pain… I pretty much ran the whole run without stopping to walk / rest. Today I’m having problems putting weight on my right knee.

I’m hoping that new shoes and a week off will help my knee make it through this Sunday’s run. I’m doing a lot more stretching and strength training to compensate. I also hope to dust off my bike and go for a couple of longer rides for the cardio workout.

So far this month, I’ve run 76.6M. Sunday’s run should bring me close to 90M. I was hoping to run 100M this month. Again, it shows how far I’ve come when I’m disappointed that I’ve only run 90M in a month.

I don’t know what I’d do without my iPod Shuffle. Running to music is nice… it drowns out the noise of the cars on Mem Drive and Storrow Drive. I also find that I end up paying much more attention to lyrics… and, unfortunately, start dissecting said lyrics. Take Mickey by Toni Basil:

So come on and give it to me anyway you can
Anyway you want to do it
I’ll take it like a man

Did she just insinuate what I think she insinuated? 1 out of 1 people surveyed in person thinks she did.

It’s Not In My Mind

2007-05-15 09:57

As I was running 12.6M (in 2h25m) on Sunday, I realized that I can’t imagine myself even running 10M. This was at mile 9.5 or so. Upon further reflection, I realize that I can’t imagine myself running 10M+ either before or after completing such a run.

On a related note, I still, somehow, don’t feel like I’m “in shape”.

What’s wrong with me?

Too Much Randomness

2007-05-01 18:53
  • Photograph: Trinity Church Stained Glass, Boston, 2005-09-17, © Nick Varacalli.Last Thurlday, went to see my friend‘s band, Platypus Rex at The Kirkland Café. They were good, as expected. I liked their song choice, both in and of itself, and because it allowed me to indulge in one of my pastimes, singing other lyrics while the current song plays.
    • Song 2: Take A Walk On The Wild Side.
    • Song 4: Oh, What A Feeling by Junkhouse (no, not the song from Footloose, the song from Due South).
    • Encore: Secret Agent Man (obviously).
  • I told my friend V that we’d leave after Platypus Rex unless the guy that reminded us of an Elvis impersonator was on next. Turns out he was the lead singer for The 85s. They were pretty good. They had a British invasion / Britpop kinda sound. The singer danced like a spaz. I refer to them as The Clash fronted by Elvis. Entertaining.
  • It looked like the next act would include someone who looked like the lead singer for Meatloaf or Motörhead in jean shorts and flip flops. Alas, the next act was just two guys on two guitars. At least I got to chat with V and Waka. During Platypus Rex, we wanted to listen to their lyrics, and had to pay attention in order to lip read. The 85s were just too loud.
  • Last Wednesday I had a job interview in Lexington. Last Tuesday, Dina and I went square dancing. Alex was getting fussy so I walked him home. Dina came home later. Wednesday, before my interview, I go downstairs, don’t see the car anywhere, and phone Dina to ask her where it is. Apparently, she though I drove it home the night before, so she walked home also. Oops. In the end, got to the interview on time by taking a cab, and our car was where we left it, un-ticketed and (obviously) un-towed.
  • Pseudo-randomness from iTunes in party shuffle mode: queueing up Kiss The Bride, I Kissed a Girl, and Kiss From a Rose. What are the chances? (That’s not quite rhetorical. I could calculate how frequently this would happen for non-trivial words by analyzing my playlist, but I’m not sure how different song ratings and number of times a song has been played factors in to iTune’s non-randomness.)
  • New form of exercise for Alex, being chased around for Florian (our Roomba). Frequently, he’s the one who starts it.
  • Eric Foreman is a character on both House and That 70′s Show.
  • Good news: I ran 5.8M, pushing the stroller, in 1:11:59. Bad news: I’m still nowhere near ready for my ½ marathon. Good news: I now consider running 5.8M as being out of shape.
  • I’m stressing about some big decisions. Whether to move to another apartment and which of two jobs to take. The stressing is made (much) worse by the fact that Alex is sleeping atrociously lately.

Ran

2007-04-26 09:52
  • Tuesday. 4.4M. With stroller (and Alex). 54m01s.
  • Lots of female joggers check us out (yeah, yeah, Alex, not me).
  • Running with the stroller when there’s wind is hard. Because of the way it’s built, it’s like a sail into a headwind and decently aerodynamic with a tailwind. Ugh.

What’s The Worst That Can Happen…

2007-02-21 23:39

… if I apply for the New York City Marathon?

Running, Milestones, American Idol Dumbness

2007-02-10 14:21
  • Photograph: Waterfire: Japanese Lanterns, Providence, RI, 2006-08, © Nick Varacalli.Alex understands drop-offs. He’ll crawl to the edge of something, say the couch or the top of a stair, and look down and feel around the edge for a way down.
  • He understand that falling hurts. In fact, he gets a bit scared when standing sometimes because of this.
  • More importantly, he understands that falling hurts if he’s on hardwood floors (or foam mats over hardwood floors) but not if he’s falling onto our bed.
  • Finally, if you rub your fingers up and down on his lips, he now makes a ‘wubba-wubba’ sound. He tends to be amused by it. He also does this on his own, either with his hand, or with whatever suitable toy he’s holding.
  • Ran the Bradford Valentine Run today. I was slightly slower than last year. Time: 52:02 (from gun to crossing the finish line). Net time (from crossing start line to crossing finish line), unsure, since they didn’t track that. I’m estimating about 50:00, just so I can think I ran 10 minute miles. Given than I’ve only run 8.5M in training this year, I’m very happy with my time, even though it’s not as good as last year. I’m happy that I was able to easily finish the race. Was very happy that I managed to sprint the last 1.5M or so. Taking off my outer long sleeve shirt (leaving me in a t-shirt) really helped, as I had to run fast to keep warm.
  • American Idolism #1: A sign encouraging one of the contestants:
Some Name is are American Idol.
  • American Idolism #2: Contestant receives negative criticism from the judges. Contestant’s mom is unhappy.
Mom: [Simon Cowell]‘s not even American. He needs to go back to… where he from, French?
    Host: No, he’s British.
Mom: He needs to go back to British.
  • American Idolism #3: I’m utterly amazed at the number of contestants they show who state that there’s no need for the judges to be negative. Not assholes, as the judges sometimes are, but negative. I’m amazed at the number of people who don’t seem to understand that it’s a competition, you go there to compete and be judged. They seem to feel that they are entitled to praise.

All One Big Circle

2007-01-24 16:10
  • Alex got to go on his first run today. 4.8M. Running when out of shape is difficult. Running when out of shape pushing a stroller is really difficult. Running when out of shape pushing a stroller with soft tires is just plain stupid. Running with the stroller makes certain things more difficult. Stairs are a bitch and a half. BTW, I’m happy to run with people, with or without Alex in tow.
  • He’s started eating Cheerios. He likes them. He can pick them up, sometimes in his palm, sometimes in a pincer grip. Ironically, he needs help bringing them to his mouth… probably the only thing that requires this sort of aid. I think he enjoys eating something that Dina and I also eat. Though he does look somewhat indignant when we eat them off his tray.

Just Another Manic Sunday

2007-01-21 23:54
  • Ran for the 1st time in months and months. 3.5M. Somewhat over 30 minutes. I’m surprised that I did as well as I did given the hiatus. I learned that in cold weather it takes me about 2M to warm up. Brrr.
  • The Patriots had the game against Indy. They should have run to the outside much more than they did. Maybe next year Brady will either get some new receivers, or be more comfortable with the current crop. I was disappointed in Chad Jackson’s season.

Stretch Goals

2006-04-30 12:59
  • Photograph: Karnak temple sound and light show, statues, Luxor, 2005-10-03, © Nick Varacalli.10M: check.
  • 12.5M (20k): check.
  • 13.1M (½ marathon): check.
  • I ran 14M in a slow 2:35. Though I’m tired, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I have a feeling I’ll be paying for this tomorrow.

Shorter Run

2006-04-22 00:02
  • Photograph: Old Winter Palace gardens, Luxor, 2005-10-03, © Nick Varacalli.9.6 miles. Somehow 15.36km sounds more impressive.
  • Didn’t time myself.
  • I misremembered distances. I thought home… river… dam… JFK bridge… home was 10+ miles. I was all psyched to have run more than 10 miles for the first time. I was very disappointed when I got home and looked up the actual distance.
  • I’ve come far. To think that 9.6 miles is short and disappointing is a good thing.
  • I’m getting a tan due to running.
  • My allergies were kicking in the first few miles, runny nose, itchy eyes. But they got better after that.
  • The last 5 miles or so were quite easy. I stopped to walk every so often, but I felt quite good… like I had another 2 to 5 miles left in me.

Side Effect

2006-04-20 10:14

Photograph: Valley of the Kings Hatshepsut's temple, Luxor, 2005-10-03, © Nick Varacalli.I walk on my tip-toes. Dancers I hang out with have noticed. A relative think it’s a sign of Parkinson’s. Thankfully my doctor disagrees. One thing I do notice is that many stretches that should be working my hamstrings end up stretching my calves instead.

Aside: according to Merriam-Webster “calfs” is only acceptable for baby cows, not for parts of legs.
