Fitness / Weight Loss Goals

2008-08-31 15:09
  • Start Date: 2008-10-01 (when we move to CH).
  • End Date: 2010-10-01 (when we move back to Boston).
  • Starting Weight: ~185 pounds.
  • Goal Weight: 160 pounds.
  • Methodology: More walking, better eating, daily exercise (e.g., push-ups, sit-ups).

I have running-related goals that dovetail with weight loss, but I’m leaving those until I can actually run again.

Move Prep Upgrades

2008-08-27 04:36

It seems like we’re buying lots of toys in preparation for our move… some because we’ve delayed for a while and can’t delay a couple of more years… some because they’ll be useful in a foreign country… some because they’re just plain cheaper here…

  • Arthroscopic surgery.
  • D-Link DNS-323 (2TB NAS (file server)).
  • Canon Rebel XSi (digital SLR (camera)).
  • SlingBox (view TV over the internet).
  • Garmin Nuvi 770 (GPS).

Age

2008-08-27 04:18

Yesterday, on 2 separate occasions, I was accused of being young enough to:

Oh… and another first for me… I’m up at 4AM to get into the office for a 5AM meeting. Ugh.

Visiting Us in Switzerland

2008-08-23 17:59

Y’all (well, y’most… unless some of you are using proxies, based on your location, I don’t know some of you reading this)… anyway… y’all are invited to visit us and crash at our place. Obviously, it’d be nice if you warned us in advance (so we can make sure we’re in town… we hope to be out of town a lot :-). Switzerland is close to everything, so feel free to use our place as a launch pad for your European tour.

Dina and I have been joking that when we get back to Boston, we won’t talk to people who don’t come visit us.

Huh?!? You’re Moving?

2008-08-23 17:52

Huh?
We’re moving.

Into your own basement?
Haha, no.

So, where?
Zürich, Switzerland. Well, actually Winterthur, which is about 20km North North West of Zürich.

Really?
Yes.

Can you get a Swiss bank account?
Yup. Though, somehow, having said account with a firm like UBS or Credit Suisse makes it less romantic.

Switzerland? What about this “CH” place you’re always on about?
Confoederatio Helvetica, the official, Latin name for Switzerland.

Why are you moving to Switzerland?
Work’s sending me there after I volunteered to go.

You’re moving there permanently?
No… only for 2ish years. Mind you, we initially said that about Boston.

Dina and Alex going with you?
Yes. Definitely.

You have a place to live?
Yes. We’ve rented a flat a bit outside the center of Winterthur, about here, where the field was. 3 bedrooms. Lots of windows, and about 65 square metres (700 square feet (this is the last time I’m doing unit conversion for y’all)) of balcony.

When are you moving?
End of September, beginning of October.

Excited?
Yup. We have lots of fun plans (see my earlier bungee jump post :-). Also scared that we’re making a huge move in less than 6 weeks (we’re out of practice).

What are you doing with all your stuff?

  1. Luggage.
  2. Air cargo.
  3. Sea cargo.
  4. Storage.
  5. Selling.

What are you selling?
See my next post.

What language do they speak there?
The one official language we don’t speak, (Swiss) German.

I’ll answer any other questions you may have in the comments.

2 Strikes For The Night

2008-08-18 21:37
  1. Received a 293.04CHF ticket for doing 61km in a 50km zone.
  2. Alex pooped in the tub during his bath.

Equipment

2008-08-17 16:40

Having a toddler that doesn’t sleep well means that Dina and I rarely get a chance to sit back and relax. Last night, we finally had some quiet time to kick back and read together. I realized that we haven’t really sat down to read a good book together in our new (been here a year) apartment when we couldn’t find the reading lamp.

Spinning

2008-08-17 13:50

We apparently sing Dead or Alive songs to Alex too much… he never says the word “spin” by itself. He always says “spin me right round”.

Computer Equipment Throw / Give Away

2008-08-14 23:46

We’ve just retired Arthur, our trusty old file server. Add another old CPU + Case to the list of obsolete hardware we should throw away but keep in the basement for the next yard sale. About the only good piece of equipment to come out of it is a DVD writer (anyone want it… LG GSA-4160B 16x Super-Multi DVD±RW/RAM).

Needs

2008-08-11 22:10

Was discussing random stuff with a co-worker, and I let slip that I tend to skip breakfast and lunch if left to my own devices due to absent-mindedness. I also mentioned that I don’t sleep well any more due to Alex constantly waking us up. He remarked that I don’t sleep well and I don’t eat well… my Malthusian needs weren’t really being met. He then said “I hope you have good friends.”

I replied, “I do… but I’m moving 3,000 miles away from them all.”

Needless to say, he looked at me like I had 3 heads.

Quotas

2008-08-11 21:59

I dislike quota systems in general. I’d rather do more with fewer good quality implements than less with more lower quality implements. Bill Belichick only filled 51 of 53 roster positions in his first season as head coach for the Patriots. I empathize.

So. Doing. This.

2008-08-05 23:54

255CHF. 7.5 seconds. 220m. Verzasca Dam Wall. 235 km away.
