Running

2008-04-30 21:44

Time to get serious about running through my standard method… over-committing and then madly scrambling to train enough for the events I commit to. So, today I:

  • Ran 3M with Alex in tow. My knee was mildly tweeky.
  • Registered for the Shoreline 5K in Beverly this weekend. This will be the shortest ‘race’ I’ve ever run.
  • Registered for the lottery for the the NYC ½ marathon in late July.

I’m hopefully telling enough people that I intend to run the Amsterdam and/or Jungfrau marathons in 2009 that I’ll feel the need to save face and actually run them.

Topical Google Ads

Our mystery hunt team We’re writing a mini-mystery hunt. One of the puzzles repeats the word “thong” multiple times as part of the puzzle (don’t ask). As a result, Google is now showing me lots of… ahem… interestingly-titled ads. For example…

Marathon Plans?

2008-04-28 19:15

I’m thinking of running the Jungfrau-Marathon in 2009. Anyone want to encourage me by pledging to run with me?

Dina’s reaction was, and continues to be, fear for my life. I think that the route elevation may be part of the reason. The fact that the course record is 2:50ish might also be telling me that this may not be the first marathon I want to run.

4 Poker Hands

2008-04-26 23:32

3 from Casino Windsor, 1 from the work home-game. Last one first…

It’s J’s birthday. Dina comes to pick me up. I’m under the gun, so it’s my last hand. I look at my cards… 72. I show them to Dina, and start to muck them. Dina says “I’d play those.” <shrug />. I throw in $2 and hold on to my hand. The new-to-the-game player to my left raises to $8. It comes back around to me. Again, I start to muck, and Dina says “You’re already in.” <shrug />. I throw in another $6 and hold on to my hand.

The flop is something like 469. I check. New-guy makes it $10. I call. The turn is 10. I check. New-guy pushes all in for about $80. I insta-call. New-guy turns over KK. He’s dismayed when I turn over my hand. No heart comes on the river, and I rake in a nice pot.

Dina nods to the new guy and says “Nice meeting you.” as we cash out and head out.

At Casino Windsor, I’m playing 3-6 limit Hold’em.

The first hand is the turn-around hand for the night. My night was going pretty badly. I was playing tight-aggressive. Unfortunately, none of my draws hit, and my good hands got outdrawn. I was seriously considering going home until a couple of idiots sat down at the other end of the table. The kind of idiots that call people when they play the board. I’m playing heads up against one of them. I turn over Qx, with a board of QJ752 rainbow, giving me top pair, bad kicker. The other guy says “straight” and flips over 86. At this point, I figure that I’m really tired and should leave the table… I was certain that there was no straight possibility… turns out I was right… the dealer starts pushing the chips to my opponent until everyone else at the table yells that there’s no straight.

The second hand, I’m in the big blind with 74. I call a single raise to close the betting. The flop is AT5. I check. Someone bets. For no good reason, when it gets around to me, I call, thinking that, at this point, I really need a club or a straight draw to hit me on the turn to stay in. What I really need is the 6 to give me both. The turn is, surprise, surprise, the 6 (c’mon… if it wasn’t, I wouldn’t be blogging about it, would I). I check and call the bet from one of idiots at the other end of the table. The river is the 8. I check, idiot bets, I raise, idiot calls. He turns over A3. He again tries to rake in the pot, but this time I actually know what I have. The only way the hand could’ve played out better is if he had the 3 instead.

The third hand, I have KK. Someone bets, I raise. Chick in mid-to-late position calls. Total of 4 players see the flop of 876 rainbow. Initial raiser checks. I raise. Chick re-raises. Having watched her play for the last hour, I peg her as having the straight with a T9. Everyone folds around to me. I call, telling myself that I’ll fold unless I get a full house draw on the turn. Well… the turn is another 8. I check, chick bets, I call. The river is a K. I check, chick bets, I raise. She asks if I hit a full house. I say “No, I actually hit quads on the turn.”. She raises, I re-raise, she calls. I turn over my KK. She resignedly flips over a T9o.

One Right Decision

2008-04-26 22:38

One of the companies that I interviewed with and was very close to accepting an offer from seems to have gone the way of the dodo. I’ve only been able to find one indirect reference to a forum posting detailing the fact that the company’s product was being shut down.

The reason that I didn’t go accept the offer was because I was worried about the amount of work I’d need to put in to getting what would be my part of the startup off the ground wasn’t worth the risk that the startup wouldn’t make it.

It’s nice to have one’s decisions validated.

Bye Bye Ubuntu

2008-04-26 12:39

My install of Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn failed when upgrading to Hardy Heron. Since I rarely use it, am planning on getting a new laptop in the relatively near future, and need the space, I just wiped it. Hopefully my next computer will be nicer to Linux.

Run

2008-04-26 11:41

Ran for the first time in almost a year. ~3 miles. ~40 minutes. With Alex/stroller. Mildly hungover from a birthday dinner last night. All in all, I’m happy. It feels like I’ve taken the first, important, step to getting back on track with my running. As usual, the first two miles were the worst. The last one was just starting to be bearable.

Unclear on Cause and Effect

2008-04-26 10:11

Quoting Alex:

Mommy, ice cream? OK.

Big bite ice cream.

[holding his head, crying] Mommy, boo-boo (Alex’s word for “hurts”) .

Big bite ice cream. No small bite. Big bite.

[again, holding his head, crying] Boo-boo head.

Apparently explaining an ice cream headache to a 22-month old is difficult.

The Things I Do For Work

2008-04-22 22:04

Not A Morning Person

Last week, starting Monday, I woke up at the following times:

  • 6:00 – Jet Lag
  • 6:30 – Ditto
  • 5:15 – Flight
  • 7:00 – Work
  • 7:00 – Work
  • 7:00 – Flight

Introvert

One of the main parts of my job is communicating with remote offices.
In fact, I somehow try to take on more responsibilities like this.

I’ve always seen cheese wheels in the supermarket. I’ve never seen one actually being cut into. The aged Gouda was tasty.

All One’s Ducks In A Row

Ducks in a RowYes, a very common sight in China-towns all over the world. Still pretty.

Sushi

It’s fascinating how different ‘foreign’ restaurants are depending on their host country.

The sushi menu has the number of kCals for each item. My green tea was hot water and a tea bag.

One random shot of sake sashimi. And finally, la pièce de résistance: “ikura sashimi”… ikura in a hollowed out cucumber end.

Agwa – Coca Leaf Liquor

Agwa Coca Leaf Liquor
Marketed as an alcoholic (30%) energy drink containing the juice of 40 crushed coca leaves. I tasted it (but didn’t have a whole shot). It made my tongue tingle.

Thoughts On Flying

2008-04-19 21:47

Tired

I never thought I’d be tired of travelling. Sure, I’m wiped and tired of travelling after taking the red-eye, train, then cab to get to work. But right now, I’m actually tired of being on the road. 18 of the past 21 days. Ugh.

Definitions

Today, the ‘threat level’ at the airport was Orange: High Risk of Terrorist Attacks. I get the feeling that the ****s at Homeland Security have a different definition of “High” and “Risk” than I do. In fact, the thing I’m most worried about at the airport is…

TSA = Terrorists

What strikes the most terror in me when I fly? Getting killed by terrorists? No. The thing I fear more is getting a cavity search from a TSA officer. The terrorists have won… we are now paranoid and fear each other.

Electronics

What’s the deal with disallowing iPods / headphones in ears / noise cancelling headphones during takeoff and landing? C’mon. Seriously?

Random Future Food Reminder

When we finally get around to making gnocchi with Dan, we should also try to make sweet potato gnocchi.

Random Travel

2 Weeks Ago – Denver

Went skiing out West in Breckenridge with good friends. It was an odd vacation. Since Alex can’t ski, Dina and I alternated ski days with Alex-sitting days. There were times I felt that instead of going to work for the day and leaving my family at home, I was going skiing instead… odd. Anyway… notes from that trip:

  • We didn’t bring the Pack’n'Play. Alex slept in our bed. Alex, being a product of his parents, is definitely a night owl / not a morning person. Dina and I would frequently wake up and leave him in bed. Normally we’d know that he was awake based on the cries coming from our room. However, one of the last mornings we were there, Alex actually woke up, got out of bed on his own, and came to find us. We were very happy / proud of him.
  • He answers his own questions / requests now. “Watch Dora?”, “OK.” (he generally says “OK” instead of “yes”, since that’s what we say to him.
  • We find we need to spell a lot of words around him. Mind you, we need to say “Digital Versatile Disc” (and, yes, we know…)
  • Except, we think that he now has figured out what “Dee-oh-are-ay” means.”
  • We flew through Salt Lake City on the way there and JFK on the way back. We spent 2 hours sitting in the plane on the tarmac over these 4 legs. Not too bad normally… crappy when you have a toddler with you.
  • They lost our luggage on the return flight. Again, not too bad normally… unless you’re flying out to the Netherlands the next day and need stuff that’s in your lost luggage. Thankfully, it arrived slightly after noon the next day.

Last Week – Netherlands

Off to the Netherlands for work, and then a weekend in Amsterdam with old friends, Hannah and Steve.

  • It took me a while to get re-used to the smaller European personal space. A couple of times I felt that coworkers were uncomfortably close until I consciously adjusted my thinking to remember what culture I was in. Odd. I used to do that automatically.
  • I need to learn not to burn my tongue on hot chocolate. Patience grasshopper.
  • We saw the chick who wrote on Jim.
  • We went to see a sex show, since Steve had never been. Unlike other times I’ve been, I was actually impressed. The performers were enthusiastic and smiling. When it came time to get a volunteer from the audience, some guy on his bachelor party volunteered himself (as opposed to being volunteered) and was a very good sport about things… hamming things up and making both the crowd and performers laugh. After the show, when we went to get something to eat (mmm… coconut chocolate), we noticed the two goth-lesbian performers grabbing a bite (hahaha… one of them wore vampire teeth during the show), joking, laughing, and acting like a cute couple on a date. In some ways, seeing the performers as happy, normal human beings was cool.
  • I seem to see the same video loop when in Amsterdam. Saw a couple of BBC’s Blue Planet episodes, plus the video for Destination Unknown (link goes to YouTube search results… videos mildly NSFW).
  • Me to Hannah after seeing a blond while strolling around, “Jim would have just had a coronary.”
  • The new wind turbine fields are oddly yet stunningly beautiful.
  • There was a cool art installation in the red light district. Brightly lit windows, white light, with fashion displays in the window. Called Red Light Fashion. Très cool.
  • I’m starting to understand Dutch.
  • While drinking in a bar, the bartender randomly walked up to us and offered us raw (well, smoked) fish. I [heart] Holland.
  • Hannah and I tried to get a manicure, and, alas, failed.
  • Had some aged Dutch cheese. €1.80 / 100g. My mind is on unit- and currency-conversion overload, so I can’t figure out whether that was a good deal or not.
  • I needed to find a T-Shirt saying, “My dad went to Holland and all he got me was this lousy shirt.”
  • It makes me feel very Type-A sometimes that I want more precise maps of things.
  • Saw some interesting, artsy wrist-watches that were using non-traditional ways of displaying time… made me wonder about how to better represent some concepts that I need to display when it comes to UI design for work.

On the plane home, I realized that the job I have now is pretty close to my dream job in some ways.

I took a lot of pictures of food while on my trip. I need to put together a blog post with pictures for Daniel at some point.

This Week – Boston / Canada

Landed in Boston, saw Sheffi for 10 minutes at the airport as he was flying back to Portland. Went to E’s BDay party, then crashed.

I returned to work on Monday to find that my wonderful co-workers had completely foiled my cube. Nick\'s Foiled Cube

Now I’m in Windsor, again for work. Thankfully things are less hectic here and I finally have a bit of time to compose blog posts…
