Mmm…

Coca-Cola made with real sugar… tasty…

Culture Clash

2007-11-26 20:54

Me: I’d like a martini please.

Waitress: White? [This is where I should have figured out something was wrong]

Me: Yes.

Waitress: Ice? [Ditto]

Me: Yes.

Turns out I ordered a glass of vermouth on the rocks. Ugh.

This is the first time I’ve ordered a martini and left the details up to the bartender that I’ve not been happy (mind you, I’m not unhappy either, just bemused).

Oh… the culture clash? I’m in the Netherlands right now (and yes, my inner clock is messed up, it’s 3AM here and I can’t sleep).

NFL Network vs. Cable Companies

2007-11-25 14:59

Basically, the NFL Network is exclusively broadcasting 8 prime football games. Notably, the Patriots vs. the Giants in week 17. They are having a spat with cable companies over what tier the NFL Network is ’sold’ with. Notably, Comcast.

If you care, please use the NFL Network’s lobbying site to send email to the media and politicians. Not because I hope that the latter two will do something about it, but because if enough people complain, the two parties will get their butts in gear and figure something out. I actually used the NFL Network’s form to complain both about the cable companies and the NFL Network (I love using people’s tools against them).

Sounds

2007-11-20 10:21

Me: Alex, what sound does a dog make?

Alex: Oof. Oof.

Me: What sound does a cat make?

Alex: Eeee-ow.

[... cow, sheep, pig, horse, elephant, bird, duck...]

Me: Alex, what sound does a football make?

Alex: [raises both arms straight up] tuh-dahn!!!

Random Notes

2007-11-09 23:04
  • Today was one of those days. I was just sick enough that going to work was more ‘relaxing’ than staying home.
  • Alex’s getting better at communicating:

    Alex: [cries]

Me: Alex, use your words and your signs, what do you want?

    Alex: Stwaw-buh-wee?

Dina and I looked at each other incredulously. It was incredibly clear for his first 3-syllable word. Well… he says ‘banana’ but only after we correct him repeatedly when he says ‘nana’.

  • Today was an oddly schizo day at work. Got a lot of little things done that should have far-ranging impact. On the other hand, our environment is messed up. I’m allowed access to the application that I write in Dev and in Prod, but not in Test.

Politeness

Yesterday, Alex said (and signed) “thank you”, unprompted.

How Not To Travel

2007-11-05 22:43

I’m on may way home from a two-day work trip. I get to airport security and start the whole drill… laptop out, belt off, temporarily put phone in hand carry, take off shoes… then I realize… oh crap…

Flashback to earlier in the day… I’m going to be on my feet the whole day, so I squirt a liberal amount of Gold Bond powder into each sock.

Back to security… as I take off my shoes, I realize that I’m tracking around white powder. I immediately have visions of being thrown into a TSA interrogation room as they suspect me of trying to track anthrax onto the plane.

Thankfully, no one says a thing. I quietly put my shoes back on and breathe a sigh of relief.
