Vocab

2007-10-27 23:16

These are the words Alex can currently communicate to us (communicating them to you is a completely different story… see below). Pronunciation obviously leaves to be desired (meeyoh is mellon, bee-ee is berry, woof is dog, and Gee-dee is his friend Gideon). Some, denoted with a *, are also signed. Some aren’t really said or signed so much as hinted at (for example, for elephant, he puts his hand up in front of himself like a trunk and makes his impression of an elephant trumpeting).

He understands a lot more than that. Among other things:

Turn the page. Pick up ___. Bring me ___. Turn. Tired. Belly button. Show. Point. What sound does a ___ make? Eat (duh). Stop. Come. Change diaper. Clothes. In / out. Wait. Close. Open. Where is the ___? How remote controls work. Forks and spoons.

He also sings along to the Muppets Muh-nah Muh-nah song. He does the mamamamama sound, while we do the do-do-do-do-do. :-)

Some people claim that if they don’t understand what Alex is saying then we shouldn’t count that as a word. I disagree. Let’s say my English vocabulary is 10,000 words. If I know a word that you don’t understand, does that mean that the word shouldn’t count? I speak 2 other languages. Do those 20,000 words not count if you don’t speak those languages?

Browser #3 Wins

2007-10-26 10:43

Needed to download drivers for an old scanner yesterday.

FireFox didn’t work… switched to IE. IE didn’t work. Added the site to my trusted zone. IE still didn’t work.

3rd browser’s a charm… Safari for Windows worked. Really?!?!?!?

Who’s Invited Redux

2007-10-25 21:08

A few more quick random thoughts about social gatherings and determining who to invite…

I’m an introvert… people, no matter how much I like them, sap my energy. At some point, even though a person is a net positive in my books, the fact that they are the nth person invited to something means that other factors balance that out. Mind you, at a certain point, a large enough gathering of my friends means that I can flit from sub-group to sub-group as I get overloaded.

The “It’s My Party and I’ll Cry If I Want To” excuse. Some people, whether friends, acquaintances, or members of our extended social circle, will simply take away from the fun of certain activities. Why should they be invited people to my activities if they’re going to take away from my fun?

Building a file server

2007-10-14 21:46

Our file server isn’t playing nice anymore. We’re getting Delayed Write Failure messages (which, apparently, are notoriously hard to troubleshoot). Dina’s Mac has intermittent problems connecting to the file shares. The machine itself (processor / main board) is fairly old… 7+ years. I’m going to try to upgrade it to W2K3… if that doesn’t work, maybe I’ll try Linux… What I really think I should do is to buy a new machine (I don’t want to build one). Suggestions on what to buy?

Alex’s Little Addiction…

2007-10-14 21:42

So I’ve blogged about how Alex is enamoured with Dora… if possible, please don’t mention Dora, backpack, Boots or other characters or items from the show. If they come up in normal conversation, so be it. But if he latches onto one of the trigger words, we’re in for anywhere from a minute to an hour of him being unhappy.

Signs

2007-10-13 14:12

Alex is addicted to Dora the Explorer. So much so that he made up a sign (hand splayed open, palm to mouth) for Boots, one of the characters on the show. He usually says “Booo” while making the sign. As much as I didn’t really want him watching this much TV… eh… unfortunately life happens. As previously mentioned, he says “backpack” when he wants to watch Dora, since she has a magic backpack (though, now he’ll frequently say / sign for Boots also). Being the kind of parents that we are (OK, I shouldn’t slander Dina, being the kind of parent I am), I taught Alex to sign “backpack” as slapping the inside of his left elbow with his right hand.

Payback

2007-10-13 14:08

I remember my parents telling me not to listen to loud music since it’d make me go deaf. I now realize they weren’t necessarily protecting my hearing for my own benefit. They just wanted to make sure that my son’s crying got the chance to make me go deaf instead of some random rock band.

Too Tired To Code

It took me a while to figure out what young attractive women had to do with programming as I was scrolling through my RSS reader: Nullables in VB – must read article.
