Runs I’m Considering

2007-05-28 08:48

These are the runs I’m considering this summer / fall.

  1. If you want to run one (or more) of these with me, ping me. I like running ‘with’ friends.
  2. If you have any suggestions for other runs I should consider, please comment or email me.
When What Distance Notes
06/24 09:00 New Charles River Run 7.5M Psyched about doing this one. I like the venue and distance. Mario has agreed to run it with me! Gun time: 1:17:17. Yay!
06/27 18:45 Lord Wakefield 5K Many other Wednesdays too. Short, but I like the venue.
07/12 Marathon Sports 5-Miler 5M This one interests me for some reason.
07/14 Urban Dare ??? More puzzle hunt than race. Darn-it! M&M are getting married.
07/21 09:00 Seacoast Seven 7M Sounds scenic. Nice distance. I’ve sent in my registration.
08/26 09:00 Marshfield Roadrunners 20K 20K Nice distance. Probably a last-minute decision.
09/03 09:00 Around Cape Ann 25K 25K Nice distance. Scenic. Challenging. Maybe next year. Visiting friends instead.
09/09 Chicago ½ Marathon 13.1M Jaci might run it. Maybe I can convince Jon & Sue to run it. Too late to make plans now.
09/23 12:00 Apple Harvest Ramble 10M Scenic.
09/29 07:00 Wicked ½ Marathon 13.1M Salem. Cool.
10/06 10:00 Applefest ½ Marathon 13.1M During a dance weekend (which I doubt I’m going to), but only about an hour away. Maybe if Jaci, Dana, or some other dancer(s) join me.
10/14 08:30 Bay State Marathon & Lowell ½ 13.1M Might be a bit short if I’m training for a marathon.
10/28 10:00 Lowell Monster Dash Duathlon 3.1M run
13M bike
3.1M run
I really want to do a duathlon this year if possible.
10/28 08:30 Cape Cod Marathon 26.2M If I don’t get into the NYC Marathon (below) I’ll consider this one. See Jaci’s comment.
11/04 NYC Marathon 26.2M I’m in the lottery. Slightly better than 50% chance I get in. I didn’t get in.
11/12 Larry Robinson 10-Miler 10M Decent distance. Might be good recovery from a marathon on the 28th.
11/11 09:00 Sea Coast ½ Marathon 13.1M Scenic. Nice time of year.

The Let’s Run, Have Some Fun & Be Fit Summer Race Series at 4.2M are a bit short for my liking, but I’m up to running them if someone runs with me.

If I actually want to run a marathon, I should consider the Boston Fit Marathon Training Program.

Sue’s trying to convince me to run a Muddy Buddy with her.

I probably shouldn’t consider a triathlon this year since I can’t swim well enough. Maybe next year. TriFind.com has a Massachusetts-specific page.

Run Results

2007-05-27 14:52

Photograph: Temple Arch On The Lake, Tokyo, Japan, March-April 2005, © Nick Varacalli.Completed Boston’s Run To Remember ½ marathon this morning in 2:21:16. Full race results are up at Cool Running. My cousin finished in about 2:18.

  • Given my gimpy knee, my goal was to finish.
  • My original goal was to finish in under 2:30.
  • I’m happy with the time and the under-11 minute pace. On the other hand I’m (intellectually) disappointed that I finished 451/482 in my division (Male 30-39).
  • My iPod gave up at mile 9 again. Time to get a new shuffle. I think I’ll cave and go for the newer clip instead of the older stick.
  • The cute asses run faster than I do. In the pack I was running with I ended up following cute pony-tails or pithy t-shirts.
  • My knee hurt the 1st step of my warm-up jog. It threatened pain a couple of times on uneven surfaces, but never followed through. It hurt again a bit while climbing the stairs to our place after the race. Applying ice, heat, and ibuprofen has helped a lot.
  • New shoes helped.
  • Very scenic. Boston skyline looked postcardy.

Go me!

List Of Interviews

2007-05-21 23:47

Photograph: Japanese Flag Through Ferry Window, Tokyo, Japan, March-April 2005, © Nick Varacalli. This is a partial list of my job search activities. Things of note it doesn’t include:

  • Conversations with recruiters or companies to set up interviews.
  • Networking with friends and former co-workers about opportunities that they might know about, either at their own company, or otherwise.
  • E-mail conversations with companies that never got to the phone-screen stage.
  • Some notable names that didn’t go anywhere: Thompson, Wellington, Charles River Development, Microsoft, Google.

  • In the end, there were only 4 opportunities that I seriously considered / was excited about. Got offers from two of them, could’ve worked something out with one, and got dinged by the last one.
  • I got dinged a lot for being rusty. I console myself that I wasn’t excited by any of the places that dinged me.
  • I found myself giving up on interviews when I answered a question the interviewer posed me and really didn’t get my answer because it didn’t fit the narrow range of answers they were expecting. When I was younger I might have tried to ‘show them the way’ / engage them in debate. I guess I’m at the point in my life (where there are a lot of opportunities out there, and interviewing costs me time away from Alex and money for babysitting) where I can’t be bothered to school people just for schooling’s sake.
  • People looking for a job should ask me about any of the companies I have listed here. I don’t think I’m willing to be fully forthright with my opinions in a public way that will follow me around for years.
  • As unprofessional as I feel at times (Dammit Jim, I’m a person, not a professional), I feel that there are a decent number of companies out there that are much worse. On the other hand, there are some great companies, and people staffing those companies who went through great lengths to make the process pretty painless.
  • The recruiters I worked with this time around were great. If you’re a techie looking for a job, I have a number of them I could refer you to. Ask and ye shall receive.
  • While I can’t / won’t point out companies that I was unhappy with, I can note that I got great impressions from Adesso, HubSpot, Tamale, and VistaPrint.
  • In the end, I’m going back to work for VistaPrint. They simply made me the best offer.

Yesterday’s Run

2007-05-21 23:09

Photograph: Hot Springs Bamboo Pipe, Tokyo, Japan, March-April 2005, © Nick Varacalli. On the good side, I ran 13.2M yesterday in 2h33m. All in all, pretty good.

On the bad side… well… I just need to whine for a bit… sorry.

  • It was drizzling / raining.
  • At mile 5, my left nipple started chafing (despite having applied liberal amounts of BodyGlide). At mile 6 I gave up trying to put up with said chafing and took off my shirt.
  • Rain + no shirt = cold Nick.
  • I’m generally pro-nudity, but I felt like a bit (OK, a lot) of an idiot with a runner’s tan and a muffin-top.
  • Rain + glasses = near zero visibility.
  • Rain + uneven running surfaces = puddles. Puddles + shoes = cold, wet feet. Cold wet feet + 13.2M = light blistering.
  • Rain + no shirt + iPod shuffle = non-functioning iPod shuffle at mile 10. Thankfully, after some time to dry out, it’s now working again.
  • Old shoes = general badness all around. Bought new shoes today.
  • The worst part, at about mile 9 my right knee started killing me. I’m quite surprised that I finished the run that quickly given how badly I was limp-running. I’m also surprised, in retrospect, that I ran through the pain… I pretty much ran the whole run without stopping to walk / rest. Today I’m having problems putting weight on my right knee.

I’m hoping that new shoes and a week off will help my knee make it through this Sunday’s run. I’m doing a lot more stretching and strength training to compensate. I also hope to dust off my bike and go for a couple of longer rides for the cardio workout.

So far this month, I’ve run 76.6M. Sunday’s run should bring me close to 90M. I was hoping to run 100M this month. Again, it shows how far I’ve come when I’m disappointed that I’ve only run 90M in a month.

I don’t know what I’d do without my iPod Shuffle. Running to music is nice… it drowns out the noise of the cars on Mem Drive and Storrow Drive. I also find that I end up paying much more attention to lyrics… and, unfortunately, start dissecting said lyrics. Take Mickey by Toni Basil:

So come on and give it to me anyway you can
Anyway you want to do it
I’ll take it like a man

Did she just insinuate what I think she insinuated? 1 out of 1 people surveyed in person thinks she did.

Look, Up In The Sky?

2007-05-21 22:47

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s our overactive geekiness…

  • Pie In The Sky: The illusory prospect of future benefits OR a state of perfect happiness; utopia.
  • Pi In The Sky: Going blind noticing that the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of the sun is three and a bit.
  • e In The Sky: More natural, realistic, transcendental prospect of future benefits.
  • Eye In The Sky: Part of me knows what you’re thinkin’.
  • i In The Sky: All in your imagination.

Alex Update

2007-05-21 22:36
  • Alex’s top right tooth has cut through.
  • Dina says “Uhm-mum” when she wants Alex to open his mouth for food. Yesterday, Alex clearly pointed to some food and said “uhm-mum”.
  • He’s really starting to climb onto things. Yesterday he climbed onto the seat of his high chair, a good 20 inches off the ground, in less than a minute when we had our backs turned.
  • Now that Dina is (also) home with him, I feel like I’m less in tune with him. :-(

Email Address++

2007-05-18 20:44

Dear E-Commerce Web Sites,

Before you get overzealous when validating email addresses, please do a bit of research. Wikipedia is a good place for general background (it’s also the first hit you get when you Google email address specification). For more in depth reading, one would obviously look at the IETF RFC 2822.

Notably, a plus sign (+) is valid in the local part.

And yes… it should be noted that the company I’m going to work for is guilty of this overzealous validation.

Alex Update

2007-05-18 12:06
  • We let him suck on a lemon wedge. He liked it (he likes pickles too). Unfortunately, the day after he got some nasty diaper rash. Unsure if they’re related, but we’re cutting out the citrus, just in case.
  • He reliably signs “more” (tap hands together in front of himself) for “food”. Oddly, it’s easy to differentiate this from clapping.

It’s Not In My Mind

2007-05-15 09:57

As I was running 12.6M (in 2h25m) on Sunday, I realized that I can’t imagine myself even running 10M. This was at mile 9.5 or so. Upon further reflection, I realize that I can’t imagine myself running 10M+ either before or after completing such a run.

On a related note, I still, somehow, don’t feel like I’m “in shape”.

What’s wrong with me?

Not Priceless…

2007-05-12 11:54
Babysitting$35.00
Movie Tickets$22.00
Popcorn & Soda$11.00
Parking$6.00
(Total)$74.00

Seeing Spiderman 3 on the big screen… so not worth it. The movie sucked. Worse, at 2h20m, the movie was about 50 minutes (i.e., about $10.00 worth of babysitting) too long.

Dina Notes…

2007-05-09 09:55
  • … that for the 2nd time in as many years, we’re both unemployed and looking to buy a car.
  • We’re getting blood / cholesterol tests today. Dina cooked us a pound of bacon for supper last night.

Big Day

2007-05-08 20:29
  • Today was Dina’s last day. She’s now going to do the stay-at-home parent thing.
  • My job hunt is over, I accepted a job offer today. I start in July. More details to follow.

Job Search Notes

2007-05-07 16:39

Photograph: Boston Public Library View, Boston, 2005-09-17, © Nick Varacalli. My job search is (hopefully) coming to a close. Here are some of my notes to myself for posterity.

  • Bring a compact digital camera when interviewing. I’ll be going to a lot of places I don’t normally go to. There’s usually something interesting to photograph.
  • One recruiter notes that the financial firms that pay the best in Boston are Risk Metrics, Fidelity, Thompson, Charles River Development, and Wellington. I didn’t interview at any of them.
  • Useful web sites:
    • LinkedIn. Very useful, lots of good leads.
    • jobs.joelonsoftware.com. RSS feed filterable by zip code. Where I got one of my final two companies.
    • Monster. The biggie job board. Never got around to using it since it has a reputation of having a lot of chaff. I had enough leads otherwise.
    • Career Builder. Another biggie job board. Again, never got around to it.
    • BostonWorks. The Boston Globe’s job board. More locally focused. Never got around to it.
    • ITA Software. Reputation for doing interesting things, hiring smart people, and having a hard interview process. Again, never got around to it.
  • It took me a while to get my résumé into a decent state. Friends were very helpful in whipping it into shape content-wise. I also improved my résumé typography. The main thing I didn’t do, suggested to me by a friend:
The importance of stressing the value added. That is, “What was Company / Institution X able to do after you got there that they weren’t able to before?” I think this is one thing that your current resume is sorely lacking. Was the company or its products able to suddenly process twice as many transactions? Roll out all of your products on time and under budget?
  • Questions to ask the interviewers. Start of interview:
    • When the interviewer inevitably asks, “So, why don’t you tell me a bit about yourself.” respond, “Well, first why don’t you tell me a bit about the job so that I can tailor my answer to your particular needs right now?”
    End of interview:
    • What would the first three goals be for the person who takes this job?
    • What are the biggest hurdles to overcome in this position?
    • What type of person do you think will be most successful in this position?
  • What a hodge-podge. At some point I’ll post my interview schedule. I have to figure out how to anonymize some of them so I can freely comment.

Busy Week

2007-05-07 16:21
  • Photograph: Trinity Church Reflections, Boston, 2005-09-11, © Nick Varacalli. Some recipe ideas:
    • Crème Brûlée Balls. Scoop some, well, crème with a melon baller. Sprinkle sugar on top half. Torch. Turn over. Sprinkle sugar. Repeat. Mmm.
    • Bacon Brûlée. Crisp some bacon. Cover with sugar. Torch. Inspired by SP’s caramelized bacon this weekend. Dina notes that I’ve had this idea before. Unsurprising I guess.
  • I’ve heard of celebrity voices used for advertisements, video games, and animated movies, but this is getting too much. Beth Israel Hospital has Stephen Hawking doing the voice for their automated parking payment machine. Yes, I’m going to hell.
  • This is the first week in ages that I’ve stuck to my run schedule. Rest on Monday. 5.8M with stroller on Tuesday. 4x1M repeats on Wednesday. Rest on Thursday. 6M in 1h9m on Friday. 4M with stroller in 43m52s on Saturday. 11M in 2h17m on Sunday. Sunday’s run was surprisingly easy, and I’m not really in that much pain or soreness today. Yesterday was the first time since I registered for the ½ marathon that I’ve felt confident that I could run it without killing myself.
  • There is a HD-DVD Processing Key on the loose on the internet. I will not reproduce it here. I just find it amusing that in trying to suppress a specific 128-bit number, it’s becoming ubiquitous. Plus, I’m wondering what digits of pi (or e) they will have to censor in order not to publish the key.
  • Wednesday last week was a big day. We finally got the ball rolling on life insurance. We made a decision to move (more on that later… but if we’ve helped you move in the past, we’ll be tapping you for help sometime in the next couple of months… trust me, it’ll be easy). I decided on which of two jobs to take (and have since become indecisive again). We made some other big decision (though I now forget what the decision was about).

Too Much Randomness

2007-05-01 18:53
  • Photograph: Trinity Church Stained Glass, Boston, 2005-09-17, © Nick Varacalli.Last Thurlday, went to see my friend‘s band, Platypus Rex at The Kirkland Café. They were good, as expected. I liked their song choice, both in and of itself, and because it allowed me to indulge in one of my pastimes, singing other lyrics while the current song plays.
    • Song 2: Take A Walk On The Wild Side.
    • Song 4: Oh, What A Feeling by Junkhouse (no, not the song from Footloose, the song from Due South).
    • Encore: Secret Agent Man (obviously).
  • I told my friend V that we’d leave after Platypus Rex unless the guy that reminded us of an Elvis impersonator was on next. Turns out he was the lead singer for The 85s. They were pretty good. They had a British invasion / Britpop kinda sound. The singer danced like a spaz. I refer to them as The Clash fronted by Elvis. Entertaining.
  • It looked like the next act would include someone who looked like the lead singer for Meatloaf or Motörhead in jean shorts and flip flops. Alas, the next act was just two guys on two guitars. At least I got to chat with V and Waka. During Platypus Rex, we wanted to listen to their lyrics, and had to pay attention in order to lip read. The 85s were just too loud.
  • Last Wednesday I had a job interview in Lexington. Last Tuesday, Dina and I went square dancing. Alex was getting fussy so I walked him home. Dina came home later. Wednesday, before my interview, I go downstairs, don’t see the car anywhere, and phone Dina to ask her where it is. Apparently, she though I drove it home the night before, so she walked home also. Oops. In the end, got to the interview on time by taking a cab, and our car was where we left it, un-ticketed and (obviously) un-towed.
  • Pseudo-randomness from iTunes in party shuffle mode: queueing up Kiss The Bride, I Kissed a Girl, and Kiss From a Rose. What are the chances? (That’s not quite rhetorical. I could calculate how frequently this would happen for non-trivial words by analyzing my playlist, but I’m not sure how different song ratings and number of times a song has been played factors in to iTune’s non-randomness.)
  • New form of exercise for Alex, being chased around for Florian (our Roomba). Frequently, he’s the one who starts it.
  • Eric Foreman is a character on both House and That 70′s Show.
  • Good news: I ran 5.8M, pushing the stroller, in 1:11:59. Bad news: I’m still nowhere near ready for my ½ marathon. Good news: I now consider running 5.8M as being out of shape.
  • I’m stressing about some big decisions. Whether to move to another apartment and which of two jobs to take. The stressing is made (much) worse by the fact that Alex is sleeping atrociously lately.
