Middle Name

Photograph: Old Winter Palace sunset, Luxor, 2005-10-04, © Nick Varacalli. We’re looking for a middle name for Alex.

Keeping in character, I’d prefer he not have one. If he does have one, I’d prefer it to be some variation of Null or Nothing. “Niente”, “Nevyn”, “Nil”, “Nothingtoseehere”, {}, “Nusquam”, “Noname” etc. Alternately, I’d prefer something indicating some sort of version. “1″, “1.0″, “A”, “Number1″, “Version 1.0″, etc.

Dina, also keeping in character, would prefer a strong, traditional, meaningful name. Also keeping in character, she’s suggesting “Nicolo” which has shades of my name, and both our grandfathers’ names.

Any suggestions?

Alex Alpha has a nice ring to it.

Works well if you knock up Dina the second time at home and have baby Boston Beta.

But, the smart money is on Nicolo.

I like Dina’s suggestion, where the middle name has the more traditional function of tying the name to the family roots.

While the “versioning” is very funny, you wouldn’t want your son’s wrath once he gets that he was named after a software, especially after being downgraded by a V.2 sister/ brother down the line….

Maybe instead of a version you should go witha code name like, say, “Longhorn”…

Our girls got traditional family middle names: one is Molly’s mom’s name and one is my mom’s name. Traditional and diplomatic. That said. I wouldn’t worry too much about the kid being traumatized by an odd middle name. Dweezle, Ahmet, Moon, and Diva all seem to have to come out all right for Frank.

Hm. You want no name or (forgive me) a stupid name, and Dina wants a name, preferably a family name. I’m not sure what a compromise would look like.

One of my thoughts is to give up on this battle. Nicolo is a nice name. You can tell people what you wanted instead. It’ll make a nice story.

If you are soliciting random suggestions for middle names, how about “Egitto” to go with the Alessandro, indicating more firmly that he is named after Alexandria in Egypt. It’s not a family name, but it is Italian.
