Building A Laptop In 100 Easy Steps

  1. Partition hard drive.

    1. ~ 46GB. WinXP Partition. NTFS.
    2. ~ 2GB. WinXP Swap File. NTFS.
    3. ~ 8GB. Partition (Linux).
    4. ~ 1GB. Partition (FAT32, Transfer).
  2. Install Windows XP Professional from MSDN disks.

    • Name the computer some Arthurian knight in workgroup some Arthurian locale
    • Set the administrator password to our common password.
    • Use Dvorak Keyboard
  3. As Administrator: Create Nick’s account.
  4. As Administrator: Maximize screen resolution for now.
  5. As Nick (ongoing): Switch to classic start menu to avoid future annoyance. We’ll tweak the start menu and task bar later.
  6. Find the Dell drivers disk. Install the Resource CD browser.
  7. Unzip all driver installs to c:\temp.
  8. Install the video driver. Reboot. After reboot, screen should be at maximum resolution. Mmm. Purty.
  9. Install audio driver.
  10. Install chipset driver. Reboot.
  11. Install modem driver.
  12. Install network driver for wired card. Manually reboot.
  13. No need to install BlueTooth drivers yet. Wait ’til I have a BlueTooth enabled device.
  14. At this point, Wireless Network Card and USB Controller not working.
  15. Plug in network cable.
  16. Start editing this file using Notepad. Tweak Notepad’s font to be blind man Lucida Console 12 point bold. Add a shortcut to this file to the desktop.
  17. Activate WinXP.
  18. Run Windows Update. Repeatedly. Come back 2 days later once the 42GB of updates has downloaded and installed.
  19. Install USB2 drivers from the internet.
  20. Download Wireless Network Card drivers from the internet or the network. Install. Reboot.
  21. Turn off sys-tray icon for wireless networking card.
  22. Attempt to connect to wireless network. Still not working…
  23. Install the Dell QuickSet application. Reboot.
  24. Download FireFox. Don’t customize it yet.
  25. Download Remote Administration Software so I can look at my desktop to see settings and installed software. Create a shortcut to point to my desktop.
  26. Map some network drives to desktop, fileserver, and other laptop.
  27. Tweak settings in System Properties.
  28. Tweak display properties.
  29. Plug in trackball.
  30. Tweak Windows Explorer settings.
  31. Tweak settings for all Control Panel applets.
  32. Install printer.
  33. Install Sonic RecordNow.
  34. Install VS.Net 2003.
  35. Install Office XP.
  36. Install October 2003 VS.Net Documentation Update.
  37. Install Zone Alarm. Add both subnets to trusted sites.
  38. Install Anti-Virus. Update definitions. Schedule it to run nightly.
  39. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  40. Install Beyond Compare.
  41. Install Dave’s Quick Search Deskbar. Copy over preferences. Turn off statusbar clock.
  42. Install subversion client.
  43. Install Active Perl (for WPP).
  44. Install WPP.
  45. Turn off recycling bin confirmation.
  46. Install eMule.
  47. Install View Full Source for IE.
  48. Install WSFTP
  49. Install Trillian. Update Trillian. Skin. Plugins.
  50. Install DivX codec only.
  51. Install MakeDoc Palm utility.
  52. Install Hold’em Showdown. Install PokerStat. Install Paradise Poker.
  53. Install Ad-aware. Install Spybot Search and Destroy.
  54. Install WinXP Powertoys. Tweak-UI. ClearType Tuner.
  55. Install URLRun. UrlRun-Add-In.
  56. Install Winzip. Turn off some context menus.
  57. Install and Upgrade Treo software.
  58. Install WinAmp. Turn off context menus. Woohoo! WinAmp supports the Play/Pause, Stop, Back, Forward buttons on my laptop.
  59. Install PopFile.
  60. Install Cygwin.
  61. Install PrintFile.
  62. Install Emacs.
  63. Firefox Extensions.

  64. Remove SP and Patch uninstall info.
  65. Install Quicken 2002. Update.

  68. Uninstall Dell Resource CD software.
  69. Install GnuServ. Fix Emacs/GnuServ shortcut.
  70. Install nant.
  71. Install FxCop.
  72. Install NDoc.
  73. Install NUnit.
  74. Configure subversion.
  75. Tweak path.
  76. Update playpen.
  77. Set up password safe.
  78. Configure Trillian.
  79. Set up WSFTP.
  80. MP3Namer.
  81. Move music files from desktop.
  82. Set www root to playpen. Move InetPub into Program Files.
  83. Configure Firefox
  84. Install VPN Client. Reboot. Configure VPN Client. Set it to connect on invocation.
  85. Install RAdmin, viewer only. Create shortcuts.
  86. Configure Emacs.
  87. Copy over tools and batch files from C:\Program Files\Tools\bin
  88. Update work playpens.
  89. Install Handy Registry Settings. Install NameClip.
  90. Install Web Developer Accessories for IE. Install PowerTweaks for IE.
  91. Install Mike’s AdBlocking Hosts File.
  92. Copy shortcuts and files off old desktop.
  93. Set up VS.Net. Macros. Tools Menu. Options. Editor colours. Build web site.
  94. Organize Start Menu.
  95. Clean Up Startup Folder. Backup Startup Registry Key. Clean Up Startup Registry Key.
  96. Set up Outlook. Curse Microsoft Office’s Save My Settings Wizard. It doesn’t export email accounts.
  97. Turn off some services. Thank you Black Viper.
  98. Turn off system restore.
  99. Finally get wireless card working. A combination of Zone Alarm settings and the WEP key conspired against me.
